John's Thoughts Blog
November 20, 2016
I now have a MacBook Pro from Apple as my main laptop. It is running, among other software, a DreamWeaver CC subscription.
January 18, 2016
The laptop is still a Win7/Linux computer, which is not what I'd prefer. The Win10 upgrader does not upgrade a Grub boot to Win10 boot conversion early enough in the upgrade process to proceed with the process of completing the upgrade.
August 23, 2015
The desktop now has a new function added to it, web development software and IDE stuff for webdev installed.... New adventure beginnning.
August 8, 2015
The desktop now has Windows 10 Home on it. Took some wrangling with a USB key to get that accomplished.
August 3, 2015
The laptop is staying with Windows 7 until I get an ISO of Windows 10-- the app says my computer is being updated by a LAN administrator, incorrect. The app has tried 5 times to upgrade my laptop and failed with the same error each time. The other computer also has failed to upgrade. Somewhat bummed out about this.
June 29, 2015
The computers are set for a July 29 update to Windows 10, in that the updates are reserved for both computers. Both computers are running smoothly.
I have been sleeping a lot during the day, trying to gradually shift back to more of a night sleeping schedule.
May 24, 2015
Both computers are running fine, and UPS's are in good shape.
Not doing much these days, meds and heart keep me from being very active, so mostly surfing the web and napping.
January 24, 2015
Had a Battery Backup (UPS) die, in a surge. However, it died gracefully as far as I can tell, protecting what was plugged into it fine. Had to buy TWO Battery Backups to replace it, shipping lead acid batteries is terribly expensive and local stores only had smaller capacity units. The computers run fine, though.
Weather has been mild for winter time.
December 21, 2014
Happy Holidays to all that read this. Some of you may say Merry Christmas, you are included in this holiday wish also.
Computers continue to work fine. Weather here is featuring a warm spell, heat has been off during day for most of last week.
November 28, 2014
The computers behave fine still, which is nice. My phone is also behaving fine.
Weather is cooling down some, for some of the time. The temps are such that heat is on, though during the day it does not cycle on much.
October 9, 2014
The computers are behaving fine despite the warmer than average weather we had. Weather is predicted to cool off part of this week, somewhat. Not a lot though.
We, mom and I, keep getting calls for a business that has not been active for ten years. Folks do not say where the number that they thought led to a business came from. I think we are being trolled, perhaps, but have no proof.
September 1, 2014
The laptop and desktop run smoothly, though to conserve them in Florida's high heat environment requires expensive air conditioning. The desktop still runs McAfee products, while the laptop runs Norton products from Symantec and a second-opinion AV which is compatible with Norton. Both Norton and Mcafee and the second-opinion thing have caught new infections of trojans, but nothing more.
Due to heat, I am not running the two computers full time. The laptop, which goes to sleep every time it is not used for an hour, is used most in summer and fall.
June 8, 2014
On the laptop, McAfee messed up for the last time. It kept shutting down FireFox 29.0.1. I know this because a malware fighter from another vender does NOT mess up FireFox. I now use something other than McAfee on the laptop.

NetObjects Fusion Standard(Corel Website Creator) is junk, IMHO, it will not run right on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OS. No templates will import right, new site creation dialog boxes open showing part of content, etc. Version 13.5.+.
I am going to continue using Dreamweaver CS6 and/or Komodo IDE Personal as long as I can, they are stable and Komodo IDE Personal is $89.00 right now.
May 16, 2014
Have the laptop back to behaving with McAfee after the McAfee tech remoted in and diagonsed a corrupt video driver file and fixed it for me, which involved my ending up with a new video driver. Now McAfee behaves again. Also learned how to handle a Citrix session restart, several times over.
April 26, 2014
Still working (off and on) on articles. I had to spend a whole night working with my desktop to reinstall everythiing except Adobe Creative Cloud. It is now so stable that I blame Creative Cloud for the Windows 8.1 instability.
April 14, 2014
I have been continuing work, slowly, on the articles I am working on, and also learning to grow up. I think I accidentally hurt a good friend by dumping my doubts and worries on him, and will apologize here to him for that as well as in email.
April 4, 2014
Little to say, have been quietly working on a couple articles for my website (not done enough to post yet), and have been helping Mom around the house and with her computer.
March 26, 2014
I am reading books on Paint Shop Pro X6 and Windows 8.1. I am learning a lot from both.
I am very happy with my Dell computer. It performs well.
March 20, 2014
I am starting to dig into the ins and outs of Paint Shop Pro X6 Ultimate on the Dell, and it is very powerful from what I have seen so far.
March 15, 2014
The Dell computer works real fast, very happy with it. It does not bog down when multiple applications are running, either.
I will be using Corel application products on my Dell, rather than Adobe application products. Adobe support was abysmal-- customer support kept trying to transfer me to tech support which put me on eternal hold 4 times, and I cannot trust anyone in the form of a software company that acts like a methuselaic powerhouse rather than truely supporting customers.
So no more Adobe subscriptions. I will use Adobe Dreamweaver from DVD as long as it is supported and upgraded that way, have gotten used to Dreamweaver from version 4 of it. That particular software title has remained stable, at least in my experience.
February 28, 2014
The new computer runs well, and Dell Backup and Recovery Pro works reasonably well. Have backups now set up-- and one made. I cannot find a Windows Backup on my new Dell, though, so will use the Dell software.
Now to sell the ones I built, wiped but with a Windows 7 Pro DVD and license key with each of them. Hoping to raise $600.00 in proceeds from selling the two, from a local computer store. That will cover almost all that remains of the cost of the new Dell.
February 22, 2014
Creative Cloud is no longer on my Dell. It had a desktop app that did not get along with Win 8. I called Adobe and after four calls got a discontinuation/cancelation of Creative Cloud.
I am growing more and more to like Windows 8. I think I probably will keep this conputer now that I have some reading material about Windows 8 (comprehensive book by David Pogue, "Windows 8: The Missing Manual"). Also have some work reading and practicing with Windows 8 ahead of me: the book is "only" over 800 pages long not counting the comprehensive index in the back of the book.
February 20, 2014
Creative Cloud is loaded and it runs quite fast on my Dell desktop. I am happy with the Dell except that the wifi does not work. So for now a wired connection will suffice.
February 19, 2014
The new Dell computer is here and some of Creative Cloud is loaded. I am like a seal with no water to swim in as regards Windows 8, but am learning. I think this is a keeper, this new Dell.
February 7, 2014
The Dell computer is ordered, should be here the 19th of this month. It is a computer with a i7-4770 CPU instead of a i7-4770k CPU, and Windows 8. I plan to get a downgrade DVD to Win 7 Pro 64 bit if I cannot live with Windows 8. Will buy the DVD soon.
January 26, 2014
The new desktop computer will not take all the RAM I built it with. Motherboard has two bad sockets. RAM is good. Will sell it and source a Dell computer. Have one picked out.
December 26, 2013
Had a nice Christmas, what some would call a good day. I had my wound from the new ICD going in checked on schedule and it was healing nicely according to the nurse who checked it.
Computer parts will arrive in Jan to finish the computer build, not ordered yet.
December 16, 2013
New defibrillator in and working, need wound where they opened my chest checked this Wed. The procedure went on for about 20 min they say, but I woke up from anesthetic an hour later.
Will do more building of computer in about a week, when I am allowed to lift the thing. Chest has to heal some first. Still need to get some parts for computer to be completely assembleable.
December 3, 2013
The mellowness continues onward. Had to adjust meds about a month ago, but the adjustment did a decent job of controlling voices.
The new computer is partly assembled, part coming in and will be so for a couple months.
October 31, 2013
I am kinda mellow, no kids for Halloween so far. Put together what has come so far towards the new computer, might have to trade in a PSU for a bigger one with more SATA power connectors and larger capacity or buy a bigger one-- have not decided yet.
October 20, 2013
I am taking a class on Dreamweaver, the second and this class is an Intermediate Dreamweaver class. I am continuing to study Buddhism also.
I think the next class I take online will be a class on Photoshop.
September 28, 2013
I was quietly whiling away time meditating today. I am experiencing more about what meditation is each time I sit.
I think each time I learn more about myself, which is good for the most part. I know I benefit from each sit, peacefullness comes among other things.
August 22, 2013
I got word today that my pacemaker/defibrillator/monitor has a low battery. As the thing is implanted in my chest, it will take surgery to replace it (batteries are hermetically sealed in units). I have an appointment in 3 months to discuss scheduling for surgery, surgical consult feels it is a thing that does not need to be done right now but will progress to need fairly soon. I understand it will have five years of life when replaced, and 4-7 years are expected life span range.
August 21, 2013
GoDaddy's website stats keep breaking for no good reason that can be seen from the webmaster's end, and goDaddy's so-called tech support are telling me nothing except that it will be fixed sometime. I am about fed up with GoDaddy's poor excuse for webmaster stats.
August 16, 2013
I have gotten my Adobe ID straightened out, one ID knows my Cloud membership and my individual owned apps now.
I now have a VGA switch for my monitor, so I can use it from the desktop or my laptop.
July 26, 2013
The WD MyPassport is up and running on the laptop with backup and some data on it, 1 TB nominal size new.
The desktop now has Linux on it, the Fedora Core 19 install has no "remove media" clue, you need to remove media to get it to reboot into its first session stuff. I would recommend the installer say to remove DVD/CD media before rebooting. FC 19 now on both the laptop and desktop, multibooting with Grub 2+.
The destop now has the Creative Cloud stuff on it, the laptop only has my licensed stuff from Adobe, and I had to set up two Adobe IDs, one for the licensed stuff and one for the Creative Cloud stuff. This is a Kludge, but works apparently. I do not know if this is the proper way to do things, but when Creative Cloud installed, it left me with needing to check for licensed app updates individually.
July 23, 2013
I have a Western Digital MyPassport coming, it should handle the data I neeed on the external for the laptop. It runs off of USB power, but the laptop should handle it fine.
I am going through the Adobe Press's "Adobe Photoshop CS6 Classrom In a Book" which is a very interesting and engaging class in Photoshop use. So far, have gone over lesson 1 twice, and will proceed on through it tomorrow and in future for about a month of partial days. That will help keep me busy.
June 29, 2013
have been working out how to add HD space to the laptop for dynamic files en masse-- things like photos I take that need editing, Website files, backups of the SSD on a weekly basis, that kind of thing. I now have Adobe Creative Cloud membership, that was cheaper than buying full licenses for the 4-5 programs I expect to use a lot in the coming months. I have a digital camera that is decent quality now, so taking digital photos is now worthwhile, and that means needing to edit them.
I have tentatively decided, to get back to storage for laptop, to get a 2.5" form factor external HD that will be USB3.0/2.0 compatible. after some looking around, I want a Western Digital Passport HD. I can back up to it weekly, and have my files backed up.
June 15, 2013
I got an SSD for the laptop, and got to scratch load everything I wanted to put on it. It took about 23 hours of work over two days, but now have the laptop reconfigured to where it should be.
Been meditating some between working on the laptop and website, seems to help me to keep from getting too tense and relaxes me. Life has taken on a slower pace, except for the laptop reload.
May 11, 2013
This is something I have wanted for months and months, a big monitor to do webdev on. Got it late last month, and played with it and the laptop setup until they worked together in Windows.
This site will grow peripatetically, in jumps and spurts. I am also studying Buddhism some, practicing it helps with some emotional swings I have been having.
I may seem to be intellectually sane, that is something I have had to work to regain over the past 5-6 years, and progress has been made. I am classed as mentally disabled, and what happened with me has left me forced to rely on meds a very good doctor has prescribed and needs to monitor often.
I am a skeptic as to sob stories, suspicious of them. So do not, please, attempt to get me to be gulliblely giving to you. I give as I choose, but am not sob story given to be driven to be gulled. Nor do I have money to invest in get-rich-quick schemes. I am simply limited as to how much money I can have in savings and checking combined, by the terms of my disability income.
April 1, 2013
I will not fold with either computer, saves money on power and mom and I need to save money. Mom is frugal, and has limited funds. I am on disability income only.
I may branch out from this site, in time, as far as what I have for websites, and that will cost more a month. I will need to find ways to make some money, not enough to emperil my disability income, but enoough to allow some expansion of this site to have a forum attached to it, etc.
February 14, 2013
Life, why do we have knowledge of past? Something to contemplate, maybe, when I am older.
January 20, 2013
Life, what is it? But a succession of nows that pass into oblivion.
Happiness, can it be more constant? Yes.
